PUBLIC NOTICE:  Dear Parents and Community Members,
We are pleased to present you with the
Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Ben Ross Public School Academy. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Chief Educational Officer Monica C. Martin for assistance.

Welcome Back! I hope that you were able to enjoy time with your family and also found some time to rest during break. January is a great time to reflect on areas of our lives where we were successful during the past year. As we think upon those successes, we can start off the New Year with pride and confidence. As with every New Year, we have the chance to begin again in areas that we’d like to be successful this year.

Here are some tips to start the New Year off in a positive way:

Get plenty of sleep. Research has found that students who do not get enough sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and do not do well in school. Scientists recommend 8 1/2 to 11 hours of sleep a night for elementary students.

Eat healthy. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Drink at least 8 (8oz) glasses of water every day. Limit the amount of sodas and junk foods you and your family eat.

Exercise your mind and body daily.

Time and Effort equals Achievement. Take the time to carefully complete all assignments at school and home; ask questions when you do not understand a task; demonstrate perseverance even when the work is difficult, and eliminate the word ¯can’t from your vocabulary. Attend school regularly and be on time.

Each of these tips will assist students to be successful in their academic and personal goals for the year. These tips will also assist your student in preparing for the Scantron assessment. Please consider starting these good habits today!

The Ben Ross faculty, staff, and I wish you a happy, successful, and prosperous New Year!

Ms. Martin

School clubs starting soon! Look for information in your child's agenda.

We are looking for a few good parents. Are you interested in volunteering? Would you be willing to help run the school store?  Do you enjoy fund-raising?  Then we need you!  If you are interested in joining the Ben Ross PTO, we would be more than happy to have you.  Our first meeting will be November 22, 2011 at 4:00 PM in the cafeteria.  Please contact Ms. Franklin at 586.575.9418 ext. 212, for details and meeting and date times.

ATTENTION PARENTS!
Students now have planners/agendas that they are using in class to learn responsibility and time management among other things. Entwined into the daily use of the planner are the Covey 7 Habits that our students are practicing and perfecting.  Please look for your students' planner daily in their backpack and make use of this excellent tool as a way to track your child's progress and communicate with his/her teacher.

 Welcome Parents!
At Ben Ross, we encourage parents to get involved with school activities. Your involvement is valuable not only to the operation of the school but to your child's success. Please visit our parent corner for resources, announcements, and information on ways you can get involved at Ben Ross!

Parents: You can now access your child's grades and attendance in real time. Click on the icon below to enter our PowerSchool parent portal.  For information on how to login, please contact your child's teacher or the main office.

Junior Academy Students embrace leadership:
From 3:00-3:30 each day, there are several Junior Academy students moving throughout the hallways on important missions. In fact, they DO have an important mission. Our Junior Academy has been selected to pilot the new leadership componenet of our school design.  Students are working with staff to obtain 60 hours of community service at a minimum for the school year.  The students gain their community service hours through volunteering throughout the building as well as participating in school wide community service events.  The students must maintain community service logs that are signed by the teacher, administrator, or staff member that they are working with.

We are very excited about this program as our students have really owned the experience.  They have requested several different jobs throughout the school, places where they see need for improvement.  This is the leadership that we want to see and nurture in them.  Primary and Elementary academy students will begin their student leadership program following the MEAP test in a few weeks.

ENROLL NOW!
Ben Ross Academy is now accepting enrollment applications for the 2011- 2012 school year.

At our academy, we strive to provide authentic learning opportunities for students through special events and services. We work closely with Initiative Science, a Michigan based company out of Ann Arbor, to provide S.T.E.M activities for students from onsite science events, cloud-based learning in English and Math, and field trips.  We believe that this partnership will allow us to provide unique ways to bring science and math to life for our students, opening their eyes to the wonders of the world and sharpening their skills in the process.  For more information on Initiative Science, please click here.
